If there’s a problem with your child’s physical, it rarely stops them from playing their sport. If a concern is found, we employ measures to make it safer—like an inhaler for a child with asthma. In the few instances where an athlete can’t play their preferred sport, they likely could participate in a different sport.

Make Sure Your Child is Safe to Play
When it comes to your child’s safety, you can never be too careful.
Children participating in organized sports, or any active child, should undergo a sports physical. Near Brainerd, Baxter, and surrounding areas, parents turn to Baxter Medical Center to give careful attention to their child’s health when performing a sports physical.
What We Do
Your Baxter Medical provider will perform a thorough evaluation of your child’s medical history and physical health. If no issues are found, your provider fills out and signs the release for your child’s sports program.
In some instances, they may call for a follow-up visit, additional testing, or other measures to make it safer for your child to participate.

A Thorough Exam for Health and Safety
A sports physical near Brainerd, or pre-participation physical evaluation (PPE), typically includes an evaluation of your child’s medical history and a physical examination.
Questions we ask about medical history include:
- medical problems and illnesses, such as asthma, diabetes, or COVID-19
- previous hospitalizations or surgeries
- allergies (to insect bites, for example)
- past injuries (including concussions, sprains, or broken bones)
- whether the child has ever passed out, felt dizzy, had chest pain, or had trouble breathing during exercise
- medicines (including over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, and prescription medicines)
We also ask about smoking and vaping, alcohol, drugs, diet pills, or performance-enhancing supplements, including steroids. We recommend taking time to answer the questions carefully with your child.
During the physical part of the exam, we…
- record your child’s weight and height
- check blood pressure and pulse
- test their vision
- check their ears, nose, and throat
- evaluate their posture, joints, flexibility, and strength

You may have several options for getting a sports physical. Some schools host opportunities to have one performed, and some walk-in services offer sports physicals. We recommend choosing someone with an understanding of your child’s medical history, which is why it’s a great idea to go to your family doctor.
